One of the goals of the Personal and Organizational AI Memory (POAM) initiative is to understand not only where the AI memory market is headed, but where it is today.
For this installment of our series of articles about companies and people in the AI Memory ecosystem, I spoke with Jonathan Covey of ZetaChain, a company that began as a blockchain interoperability platform and is now making a major pivot into AI memory through ZetaChain’s Anuma, its consumer AI application.
ZetaChain’s shift is notable because it connects two themes that are increasingly central to Personal and Organizational AI Memory: user-owned memory and permissioned access. The company now describes itself as “the private memory layer for AI,” powering Anuma as a user-owned foundation for memory, identity, permissions, payments, and agents.
From Blockchain Interoperability to AI Memory
ZetaChain started with a crypto thesis: blockchains were fragmented, and developers needed a way to build applications that worked across Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, and other networks. Covey said the original goal was to create the first blockchain that connected all blockchains, simplifying development and user experience across wallets and chains.
That original mission produced a large ecosystem. ZetaChain reports that its historical network reached millions of users and processed hundreds of millions of transactions. KuCoin reported that the project had a historical base of 12 million users and more than 240 million transactions processed.
But ZetaChain has now made a sharp strategic turn. The company is phasing out traditional cross-chain services to focus on Anuma and what it calls user-owned memory, identity, permissions, payments, and AI agents.
Anuma: A Consumer AI App With Private Memory
Anuma is ZetaChain’s first consumer AI product. It is designed as a private AI interface where users can access multiple AI models while preserving context and memory across those models. ZetaChain says Anuma combines leading models, encrypted memory, and user-controlled access in one experience.
Covey described Anuma as a consumer app that connects major AI models with a focus on privacy and user memory. In his words, “anyone can connect the models, but memory is the real moat.”
The product includes multi-model access and Council Mode, where users can ask multiple models the same question and compare or synthesize answers. Covey said this could be useful for researchers, healthcare professionals, or other users who want to cross-check responses across models.
Unlike many consumer AI applications, Anuma is designed around persistent context rather than isolated conversations. The goal is not simply to provide access to multiple models, but to create a private memory layer that allows those models to work from shared context while keeping users in control of their information.
Why Blockchain Matters: Ownership, Access, and Permissions
ZetaChain’s AI memory strategy is not about storing memory directly on-chain. Covey was clear that videos, files, and memory data are not efficient to store on a blockchain.
Instead, ZetaChain sees blockchain as useful for access, authentication, ownership, and permissions. A user can sign with a crypto wallet to prove ownership over memory and grant specific agents or applications access to portions of that memory.
This is where ZetaChain’s Anuma aligns closely with the Personal and Organizational AI Memory (POAM) vision. In POAM terms, blockchain may function less like a database and more like a control plane for memory ownership. The memory itself may live in encrypted storage, local devices, cloud backups, or connected applications, while the blockchain layer manages identity, authorization, payments, and auditability.
This distinction is important. Blockchain is not being used as the memory itself. Instead, it becomes the trust layer that determines who owns memory, who can access it, and under what conditions.
Memory for People, Not Just Agents

Today, memory is scattered across assistants, applications, devices, documents, enterprise systems, and online services. The POAM vision proposes unifying those fragmented memories into persistent Personal and Organizational Memoromes that can provide relevant context to authorized models, agents, applications, and devices.
Anuma is one of the clearest examples so far of a company building directly toward memory for people rather than just memory for agents.
Covey said Anuma can import context from Claude, Google Drive, Notion, and other sources so the application can “get to know you on day one.” He also said the goal is for Anuma to retrieve relevant context across connected applications and conversations users have had with multiple AI models, subject to user permissions.
That is a meaningful distinction. Many current AI memory systems are designed to help a specific agent remember a specific workflow. Anuma is aiming at a broader consumer memory layer that follows the user across models rather than keeping memory trapped inside individual applications.
Early Adoption and Market Signal
ZetaChain says Anuma reached 60,000 users in its first month, and multiple reports indicate it surpassed 100,000 users in just 38 days.
Covey told IT Brand Pulse that Anuma had approximately 160,000 users after three months, with a large base of active free subscribers. He described the product as functional today, offering unified memory, multi-model access, privacy controls, and encrypted storage, while emphasizing that the company still has an ambitious product roadmap.
This resembles a familiar pattern in consumer AI: rapid free-user adoption followed by a race to determine whether persistent memory creates enough long-term value to sustain recurring subscriptions.
A Consumer Focus
Unlike many AI memory companies focused on enterprise agents, Anuma is primarily a consumer product. Covey said ZetaChain is pursuing the consumer market because of its enormous potential, while enterprise adoption introduces significantly greater governance, compliance, and deployment complexity.
This matters because Personal and Organizational AI Memory may emerge first as a consumer subscription category before becoming a mainstream enterprise software category. The analogy Covey and I discussed is similar to password managers such as 1Password—a personal utility that becomes increasingly valuable over time because users build their digital lives around it.
