222 AI developers voted in one of the most closely watched categories in the AI engineering stack. The results reveal a split between market adoption and innovation leadership.
The March 2026 IT Brand Pulse AI Brand Leader survey asked 222 members of the AI developer community to vote for Market Leader and Intelligence & Innovation Leader in Foundation Model Platforms, one of 26 products in the AI Engineering stack. OpenAI was voted Market Leader with 32.0% of votes, followed by Anthropic at 27.0%. However, Anthropic was voted Innovation Leader with 35.1% of votes, ahead of OpenAI at 30.2%.
This divergence signals a competitive top tier rather than a runaway winner. OpenAI currently holds the strongest overall developer mindshare and ecosystem position, while Anthropic is increasingly viewed as the vendor pushing the category forward in areas such as model quality, safety, and enterprise-readiness. The IT Brand Pulse analyst team expects this split to be one of the most closely watched dynamics in AI engineering as both platforms compete to define the foundation model layer.
What Are Foundation Model Platforms?
IT Brand Pulse defines Foundation Model Platforms as services that provide access to foundation models and APIs for building, deploying, and scaling AI applications. These platforms deliver capabilities such as model inference, fine-tuning, prompt orchestration, safety controls, governance, and integration with cloud infrastructure, making them the core layer for operationalizing generative AI in production. Foundation Model Platforms sits within the Development sub-layer of the broader AI Engineering stack, alongside AI Model Development Frameworks, LLMOps Platforms, AI Agent Development Frameworks, and AI App Builder Platforms.
