How the AI Industry Firsts ranking works
What counts as a first
An AI Industry First is the first commercially available technology, product, feature, or publicly demonstrated capability of its kind. Every entry in the record is validated by IT Brand Pulse analysts and sourced to a primary record: a press release, a peer-reviewed paper, a wire service report, or a regulatory filing. Secondary coverage is never the source. If we cannot find the primary record, the first does not enter the tracker.
How entries are ranked
The tracker is sorted by Impact_Score, a two-decimal score from 0.00 to 100.00 that the analyst team assigns to each first. The score measures total impact on humankind and how revolutionary the achievement was. Date plays no part in rank order. ChatGPT sits at rank one because no other AI release changed human behavior at that scale or speed. AlphaFold sits in the top ten because it solved a fifty-year scientific problem.
Five questions drive the score:
- How many lives were affected or saved
- Whether it created an entirely new category or industry
- Whether it solved a longstanding scientific or engineering grand challenge
- How fundamentally it changed human behavior or capability
- Whether it triggered cascading innovation: funding booms, new companies, new fields
Two decimals exist so that two firsts never tie. When two achievements seem equal, the analysts decide which had the greater human impact and give it the higher decimal. In the rare event of an exact tie, the older first ranks higher to honor the pioneer.
The seven tiers
The score sets the tier, which is what the tracker shows.
| Tier | Score | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Civilization-level | 95 to 100 | World-changing impact. The ChatGPT and AlphaFold cohort. |
| Industry-transforming | 85 to 94 | Redefined a market or a capability. |
| Category-creating | 70 to 84 | Spawned a new product class. |
| Significant milestone | 50 to 69 | A notable advance within a category. |
| Notable achievement | 30 to 49 | A meaningful subcategory first. |
| Historical/ | 10 to 29 | Precursor work that enabled later breakthroughs. |
| Vertical first | 0.10 to 9.99 | A real first within a single industry or use case. |
How the record changes
The live tracker updates weekly. New firsts are added as they happen, and a score can be revised as long-term impact becomes clearer. Every addition, revision and removal is written to a published change log, so the editorial history is open.
The Top 100 AI Industry Firsts of All-Time is published quarterly as a frozen edition. It does not move between quarters, and each edition shows how every entry moved since the last one. The live tracker and the Top 100 can disagree for up to a quarter; the live tracker is always current, the edition is always citable.
Independence
Nobody pays to be in the record and nobody pays to read it. Vendors can nominate a first and can engage IT Brand Pulse to validate it through the Industry First Program, and validated firsts that carry the Industry First Award show a marker on the tracker. The award never changes a first's score, rank, tier or inclusion. Analysts assign scores independently of any vendor conversation about the award, and a score is never revised as part of one.
